screen-shot-2016-11-24-at-3-21-25-amMany Christmases ago I heard Bruce Springsteen singing “Santa Claus is coming to town” and I thought… this has gotta be a Saturday Night Live sketch (like I said, it was a long time ago). The guy who sang about “debts no honest man could pay” was singing a boppy Christmas Carol? It just didn’t compute.
I tried to imagine a Christmas Carol that sounded more like The Boss and came up with his version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. At the time I was writing parody songs with my friend Art Norris as the duo “Impolite Company.” Art came up with the name. His logic… polite company doesn’t talk about sex, politics or religion and those topics pretty much covered our set list.
A few months ago I stumbled on a recording of our Springsteen Carol, then I saw a YouTube video mash-up of Rudolph and Sting’s Roxanne, discovered the classic Rudolph was all over YouTube and thought… why not?
I passed the tune and the idea on to the wonderful editor Erik Libonao, offered a few suggestions and asked him to play.
I hope you enjoy.
Merry everything.
