Lyrics and Music by: Mark Leiren-Young and Kevin Crofton

When I was a little boy I used to wander in the trees
Pick all the pretty flowers and run from all the bumblebees
Now the forests of my youth are nothing but a memory.
It’s shopping malls and condos son. Isn’t progress lovely.

So shoot the spotted owl and harpoon every whale
And make sure you clear-cut every tree
The future’s never done a thing for me

I admit it. I worry about the dolphins are they more intelligent than we are? And if they are, shouldn’t we kill them now before they make us juggle herring at Sea World? Sure I worry about Oil spills. I have shares in Exxon.

Oh yes I was a boy scout once, had lots of merit badges
Went camping in the forests where I collected lots of rashes
My troop went catching butterflies in a lovely field outside
I must have caught a thousand when I used that pesticide

So shoot the spotted owl and harpoon every whale
And spill all the oil you can find
All the fish are dead so they won’t mind

Of course I recycle. My Mercedes was previously owned. We have to save the sturgeon. Where would we be without caviar. I care about the forests if we run out of trees what are we gonna print money on?

My Grampa took me fishing when I was nine or ten
We’d go out every Sunday, wake up at 4 a.m.
We never caught a single thing, no not a single bite
Until the day old Grampa said, “Let’s use some dynamite”

So shoot the spotted owl and harpoon every whale
And make sure you clear-cut every tree
The future’s never done a thing for me
So shoot the spotted owl and harpoon every whale
And lose the ozone, ‘cause I like it hot
Pave paradise and put up a parking lot
